Carpets better for allergies.  Yes, it’s true.  Carpets get really dirty, and get spots on them, yes.  That’s because they trap and hold the dirt and dust in their fibers.  It’s the dust, and more specifically, the dust mites that are the problem.

Dust mites are everywhere, and dust mite allergies are very common.  The best way to control indoor allegies is to control the dust.  How do you do that?

Carpets Better For Allergies

First, have carpeting instead of hard floors.  Area rugs too.  Carpets better for allergies.  It’s in the science.  The Swedish Study was conducted in the 1970’s, and proved that carpets are better for people with allergies.  Carpet traps and holds the dust, instead of letting it float in the air.

Swedish Study

If you walk across a hard surface floor, the dust gets kicked up into the air, and floats at 4.5 feet for a minimum of 8 hours if it is not disturbed again.  4.5 feet is the average breathign zone of a woman or child.  If you walk across a carpeted floor, or an area rug, no dust gets kicked up into the air. It stays trapped in the carpet fibers due to Vanderwohl’s law of magnetic forces.

A comparison

Hard surface floors will need to be microfiber dusted daily, and damp mopped at least once per week.  Accordingly, you will need to dust your furniture and other household items regularly with a microfiber duster, as the dust will settle.  Actually, that’s a lot of work.  Your hard surface floors will need to be professionally cleaned every couple of years to get the grout looking good again, or to get the soil out of the pits of your travertine.  Floor cleaning solutions leave residues, which build up over time and need a professional wiht high powered equipment to get them back to true clean.

Generally, carpeting should be vacuumed at least once per week in rooms where you have activity regularly, like living room, family rooms and bedrooms.  Your formal dining room that no one goes into but the cat, that can proobably be vacuumed once a month or so.  If you have pets, or lots of people, you may want to vacuum more often. Spots and spills need to be addressed right away, and carpet protectors can help with minimizing stains.  Professional cleaning once a year is recommended, and it is required by the carpet manufacturers at least once every 18 months to maintin your warranty.

In Conclusion

So it appears that having carpet instead of hard floors will save you a lot of time and energy cleaning. Carpet also helps insulate your home.  And there is a reduced risk of slip and falls on carpeted floors. Carpet and area rugs reduce noise levels and echoing in your rooms too.

So, which would you rather have? The product with multiple benefits like carpet, or the one that causes you more work, and can aggravate your allergies to boot?
